So is the case with San Antonio jewelry designer Carroll Dorsey Walker for bejewel. Walker’s business is a case study in success through motivation, focus and a passion for creativity. She started bejewel five years ago, and now her designs are sold in 350 retail stores across the country and in wholesale showrooms at the Dallas Apparel Mart and the Berger & Stevens Showroom in the heart of New York’s Fashion District. CareNet

Christus Santa Rosa Primary CareNet has been recently acquired by former West Telemarketing executive John Erwin. CareNet is a 15-year-old San Antonio-based medical call center serving hospitals, insurance companies and government agencies. CareNet helps organizations lower costs by outsourcing clinical and marketing services, allowing clients to increase the convenience and quality of services they provide to their patients.

“Many health care providers and insurance companies are turning to medical call to assist patients with their overall health,” says John Erwin, CareNet president and CEO. “CareNet lightens the burden by proving 24/7 custom-branded clinical services, including nurse triage, emergency intervention and post discharge follow up. CareNet allows organizations to more effectively manage patient relationships while facilitating timely access to patient care and information.”

CareNet has retained all of the employees and medical staff previously employed by Christus Santa Rosa. The company plans to further expand its disease management and telemedicine services. These technology-driven extensions of patient care are the latest trend in monitoring, evaluating and educating patients in the home. Outsourced disease management and telemedicine can notably decrease overall costs because they improve the coordination of care and quality of life for patients while decreasing costly hospital stays.

CareNet President and CEO John Erwin has been a leader and innovator in the call center business for more than 20 years. Prior to acquiring CareNet, he founded and was president of West Teleservices Direct, a company recognized during his tenure as the fastest growing call center company in history as well as one of the largest. In a 10-year period John transformed West Teleservices Direct from a start-up company to one with more than 10,000 employees and 17 locations nationally.

Julian Gold

In an intrepid move demonstrating the company’s confidence in Austin’s economic recovery, Julian Gold opens its newest store at 1214 W. Sixth Street in Austin today.

Julian Gold is a privately-owned retailer specializing in fine women’s apparel, accessories and cosmetics and is known for its unparalleled customer service. Established in San Antonio in 1945 by Julian and Dorothy Gold, the company is headquartered in San Antonio and also operates stores in Corpus Christi and Midland, employing some 140 people company-wide. According to President Bob Gurwitz, Julian Gold has experienced steady growth over its 57-year history.

The new Austin store occupies approximately 11,000 square feet of space leased from Whit Hanks Realty Company. It is an all-in-one women’s specialty store, carrying everything a well-dressed woman needs, including designer sportswear, businesswear, eveningwear, shoes, jewelry, accessories and furs. The store also has a full-service on-premise alterations department. The decision to open a store in Austin was 10 years in the making with the most serious considerations taking place within the past five years. That’s when Julian Gold officials began searching for the perfect location.

“To provide the customer service that Julian Gold is known for, we must have great professional people as well as an easily accessible location with convenient parking,” explains Gurwitz.

Julian Gold patiently continued its search for the perfect location and in January 2002 signed a lease on 1214 W. Sixth Street. Julian Gold makes its Austin debut undeterred by slumps in the area’s economy.

“There’s still plenty of business to be done in Austin, and this is the time to go in,” Gurwitz says. “We’re going in at the low and will wait for the high.”

Synergy Studio

Renowned expert Phil Jones will conduct a San Antonio workshop on the didgeridoo, an Australian instrument that produces a mesmerizing and enchanting tone when played. Believed to have originated nearly 50,000 years ago, the didgeridoo is a long wooden tube carved from a eucalyptus tree. Deep circular breathing is required to play the instrument, and the calming and steady tones produced by the didgeridoo are said to have meditative and spiritual healing powers.

“Not only does the didgeridoo produce an awesome sound, but its healing properties have been used for thousands of years,” says Charlotte Jorgensen, didgeridoo novice and sponsor of the three-hour workshop. “Even beginners find that playing the instrument allows them to forget the outside world and reach a deep state of relaxation and awareness. It’s a wonderful escape.”
